Job Description

Please note that we are no longer accepting applications for this position.

The Muslim Alliance for Sexual and Gender Diversity (MASGD) works to support, empower and connect LGBTQ Muslims. We seek to challenge root causes of oppression, including misogyny and xenophobia. We aim to increase the acceptance of gender and sexual diversity within Muslim communities, and to promote a progressive understanding of Islam that is centered on inclusion, justice, and equality. For more information about MASGD, please visit muslimalliance.org.

Objective of Consultancy

The objectives of the MASGD Coordinating Consultant will be to manage and lead the day-to-day functions of the organization. To date, MASGD has had no paid staff. Volunteers have carried out all of the work of the organization, with occasional support from project-based consultants. As a result, this is primarily an operations and administrative position focused on supporting the externally facing work being led by the MASGD Steering Committee.

Ideal Candidate

Candidates must have a passion for relationship building and supporting dynamic collectives from a logistical and operational perspective. Candidates must have a demonstrated commitment to social justice. We expect candidates to have a knowledge of basic Muslim principles and awareness of diversity within Islam. LGBTQ Muslims are strongly encouraged to apply—particularly new and emerging leaders within the community, who might be interested in this as a leadership development opportunity.

Major Responsibilities Include:

  • Participate in regular communications with the MASGD Steering Committee, MASGD committees, key stakeholders and partners through email, in-person meetings and teleconferences. This includes working closely with a supervisor who will be one of the Co-Coordinators of the MASGD Steering Committee.

  • Provide logistical support for and attend all MASGD Steering Committee meetings, including but not limited to scheduling, securing housing and transportation, contributing to and printing agendas, documenting discussion and decisions, and compiling and distributing finished meeting notes in a timely way.

  • Provide ongoing administrative support for the Steering Committee and core programmatic efforts, including the annual MASGD retreat.

  • Triage and manage MASGD’s email correspondence and requests for community engagement.

  • Document work completed and report to the Steering Committee regarding requests/responses, issues arising, and progress on objectives.

  • Coordinating with and supporting the work of project-based consultants, including the Black Queer and Trans Muslim Retreat Administrative Assistant

  • Devote approximately 20 hours per week to MASGD responsibilities. (Hours may vary week to week.)

Additional responsibilities may be negotiated.

Compensation

The complete consulting contract has a maximum value of $20,000 for the year. This will include wages at $25/hour and, if needed, the use of a MASGD laptop or netbook, and a stipend for office/co-working space.

This position does not include health insurance or other benefits beyond those stipends listed above.

Location

The Coordinating Consultant will work remotely and may be located anywhere in the U.S. Priority may be given to those located in proximity to NYC for occasional in-person meetings with MASGD Co-Coordinators.
